Ukraine is dealing with a tough situation as Russia keeps targeting its energy systems. This isn't just any attack; it's a strategic move to disrupt Ukraine's power grid, especially during the cold winter months.
Late on Monday night, Russia sent a wave of drones towards Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian air force reported that they intercepted most of the drones, but not all. The remaining ones caused significant damage, leaving five regions without power. These regions include Sumy, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv. The energy ministry is working on repairs, but safety concerns are slowing down the process.
In Odesa, the damage was severe. The regional governor mentioned that both energy and gas infrastructure were hit. Unfortunately, there was also a casualty: one person was injured. DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, reported that one of its facilities in Odesa was heavily damaged. This outage affected around 30, 800 households.
The northern region of Chernihiv also faced significant damage. A local power grid company stated that five key energy facilities were hit, leaving tens of thousands without electricity. Meanwhile, in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, a critical infrastructure facility was severely damaged by Russian missiles.
This isn't the first time Russia has targeted Ukraine's energy system. They've been doing this for a while, especially during the winter. The cold weather makes repairs even more challenging, leading to prolonged blackouts. Serhii Kovalenko, CEO of energy distribution company Yasno, expressed his frustration on Facebook, stating that the prolonged power outages are not due to the energy companies but because of the deliberate attacks by Russia.
Last week, Ukraine declared an energy emergency. The grid is struggling due to accumulated wartime damage and the recent wave of targeted attacks. To combat this, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced plans to improve electricity transmission from the western part of the country to the more power-hungry eastern regions.
