Ukraine Peace Talks: Progress or Just Talk?

Witkoff didn't mention his talks with the Russians. This raises questions about how involved Russia was in these discussions. Russia has been clear about wanting to keep the Ukrainian territories it has seized. Ukraine, on the other hand, refuses to give up any ground. The meetings in Miami were part of a series of talks based on a U. S. -drafted 20-point plan to end the war. Witkoff highlighted four key points discussed: developing the 20-point plan further, creating a multilateral security guarantee framework, establishing a U. S. security guarantee framework for Ukraine, and focusing on economic development to rebuild Ukraine.Negotiators also focused on "timelines" and "sequencing of next steps. " This suggests that while progress is being made, there is still a lot of work to be done. It remains unclear if the terms discussed will be acceptable to Moscow. Witkoff stressed that "peace must be not only a cessation of hostilities, but also a dignified foundation for a stable future. " This is a noble goal, but achieving it will require more than just talk. It will require concrete actions and compromises from all parties involved. Meanwhile, U. S. intelligence continues to indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not abandoned his ambitions of taking over Ukrainian territory. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of the peace talks. If Putin is not willing to compromise, it is unlikely that a lasting peace can be achieved. Senator Lindsey Graham suggested that if Russia refuses to accept the current deal, the Trump administration should consider seizing ships carrying sanctioned Russian oil. He also proposed labeling Russia a state sponsor of terrorism for kidnapping Ukrainian children. These are drastic measures, but they highlight the frustration and urgency felt by some U.
