Russia faced one of its worst days in Ukraine. On October 25, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that 1, 630 Russian soldiers were lost, making it the third-highest single-day loss since the invasion began in February 2022. This brings the total number of Russian soldiers lost to 685, 910. Alongside this, Russia also lost a significant amount of military equipment, including 33 armored fighting vehicles, 34 artillery systems, and 73 UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles).
October has been rough for Russia, with the losses this month topping 7, 390 troops, including the previous high of 1, 740 on May 12. The high losses come as Russia faces increasing trouble on the battlefield and growing attention from other nations. Recent reports have shown North Korean soldiers being trained in Russia, with estimates suggesting up to 12, 000 could be deployed by December.
Russia's biggest challenge isn't just troop loss; artillery losses have also hit hard. In 2024 alone, Russia spent about $8 billion on replacing lost artillery. This comes as no surprise given the rising losses of UAVs and artillery systems in the past few months.
Part of the reason behind these high losses might be the involvement of foreign troops. The US confirmed that North Korean soldiers are being trained in Russia, with Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledging the presence. This marks a significant event, as it's North Korea's first time engaging in a foreign war.
As the war continues, both sides are feeling the strain. High troop and equipment losses are a stark reminder of the real cost of conflict. It's crucial to stay updated and think critically about the situation, as the narrative can change quickly.
