Ukraine Under Fire: Russia's Biggest Drone Strike Since War Began
Ukraine, KyivSun May 18 2025
Russia's latest move in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine has been a significant escalation. The country launched a massive drone attack, the largest since the war started. This happened just days after peace talks between the two nations. The Ukrainian military reported that 273 Shahed drones were sent, mainly targeting the central Kyiv region.
The attack was brutal. A 28-year-old woman lost her life, and three others, including a four-year-old child, were hurt. The governor of the Kyiv region, Mykola Kalashnik, shared this sad news. The drones caused serious damage. They destroyed homes, harmed a tall building, and started fires in garages. Ruslan Stefanchuk, the head of Ukraine’s parliament, called this "terror in its purest form. "
The attack lasted nearly nine hours, according to Stefanchuk. It was a clear message from Russia, despite their claims of wanting peace. The emergency services in Ukraine had to send 55 rescue workers to handle the fires and damage caused by the drones.
Meanwhile, other parts of Ukraine were also under attack. In the Donetsk region, one person died, and eight were injured due to Russian shelling. Drones also targeted the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Russia, on the other hand, claimed to have shot down 75 Ukrainian drones in the past day. This was reported by TASS, a Russian state news agency.
This recent assault comes after a deadly drone attack on a bus in Ukraine’s northeastern region of Sumy. This happened just hours after the two countries had their first direct peace talks since the start of the invasion. The talks, held in Turkey, did not lead to any major agreements. They discussed a possible meeting between their presidents, a ceasefire, and agreed to a prisoner swap.
Russia's demands during the talks were clear. They wanted Ukraine to give up land that was still under Kyiv’s control. This is a position that Ukraine has always rejected. Leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Poland called Russia's stance in the talks "unacceptable. "
In a recent TV interview, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he wanted to "eliminate" the causes of the conflict. This interview was released on Sunday, but it was recorded earlier. It shows that Russia's position might not change anytime soon. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is set to speak with Putin about ending the Ukraine war. This conversation is expected to happen soon.
