The goal? To strengthen their position in the war against Russia. Ukrainian leaders hope to show Trump they're reasonable by hinting at possible concessions in negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky flew to Paris to meet Trump, hoping to gain his support. Ukrainian leaders delayed signing a minerals deal, perhaps to let Trump take the credit. A lawmaker even nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump's foreign policy adviser, Keith Kellogg, has proposed cutting off aid if Ukraine doesn't participate in peace talks. Ukrainian officials are trying to prove Putin isn't ready to negotiate fairly.
Ukraine has substantial deposits of critical minerals, like cobalt and lithium, which could benefit American industries. Trump's transactional approach makes these resources attractive. Zelensky's team is betting that Putin won't negotiate in good faith. They hope to show Trump they're willing to be realistic and constructive. Trump has had a complex relationship with Zelensky, including the 2019 call that led to his impeachment.
