Ukraine's Nato Dream: A Long Way Off

Tue Dec 03 2024
Ukraine's hope to join Nato is not happening anytime soon, say diplomats. A senior Nato diplomat told Reuters it could take months to reach a consensus. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is in Brussels for a Nato meeting. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, sent a letter asking for an invitation. He thinks it would take away one of Russia's reasons for war. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wants Nato protection to stop the fighting. He says he'll then negotiate to get back Russian-occupied land. The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, says supporting Ukraine is key for peace talks. A Russian lawmaker expects peace talks next year. The US and Ukraine discussed Russia's new missiles and future military aid. The US will send Ukraine $725 million in weapons. Ukraine's defence minister talked about plans for 2025. A Ukrainian military spokesperson said Russia has used at least 60 North Korean missiles. They're not very accurate. Germany's foreign minister warned China that supporting Russia could hurt their relationship. She wants China to help end the war. Recent Russian attacks killed at least four people and injured many more.
