Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's president, has been clear: he wants a complete victory, with Russia pulling out of Ukrainian territory. Despite strong support from the U. S. and Europe, Ukraine's hopes are starting to look unrealistic. This year has been tough, with Russia making gains in the Donbas despite high casualties. The war might end through diplomacy, but some ideas being floated aren't helping. One plan suggests Ukraine trades land for NATO membership. But there are big issues with this.
First, Russia likely wouldn't agree. Vladimir Putin has always been against Ukraine joining NATO. In fact, the fear of this happening might be why Russia invaded in the first place. Plus, Russia is doing well on the battlefield right now. Why would Putin stop the war when things are going his way?
Even if Russia did agree, NATO has its doubts. The U. S. and some other members are hesitant about adding Ukraine. That's because joining NATO means all members promise to defend each other, even with their own troops. This is a big deal, especially when it comes to a nuclear-armed Russia. NATO has been careful so far, even refusing a no-fly zone at the start of the war.
Some people think that once Ukraine joins NATO, Putin will be too scared to attack. But will he really? NATO has shown it's not ready to fight Russia directly. So, Putin might not take NATO's promises seriously. This could lead to a dangerous test of NATO's power.
As the war goes on, diplomacy will be more important. But not all plans are good. A deal that gives Ukraine NATO membership might not bring peace, it might just make the war last longer.
