Ukraine's Strategic Shift in Kursk: A New Chapter
Kursk, RussiaSat Mar 15 2025
The Ukrainian army's presence in the Russian region of Kursk has become increasingly challenging. Recent developments show that Russian forces have regained control over several towns in the area. The city of Sudzha, previously held by Ukrainian troops, was recaptured by Russian forces. This shift in control has raised questions about Ukraine's strategy and the future of their operations in the region.
Ukraine's top military commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, acknowledged the ongoing battles in the suburbs of Sudzha. He emphasized that while the Ukrainian army aims to maintain defensive positions, the priority is to safeguard the lives of their soldiers. This means that if necessary, Ukrainian troops will retreat to more secure defensive lines.
The decision to withdraw from Kursk is not sudden. It has been in the works since December, when Russian forces attacked both flanks of the Ukrainian bridgehead. This move left Ukraine with limited options for supplying troops with ammunition or evacuating the wounded. The withdrawal is seen as a strategic move to preserve the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and to improve the defense capabilities of their brigades.
The logistical challenges and the significant numerical advantage of Russian forces have made it difficult for Ukraine to maintain their positions in Kursk. Russia has stationed around 60, 000 soldiers along this section of the front, making it a formidable opponent. The Ukrainian military leadership believes that retreating to their own territory will enhance their defense capabilities.
The Kursk operation has been a subject of debate among Western observers. Some view it as a success, highlighting that it diverted Russian forces from other fronts and inflicted damage on them. Others, however, see it as a waste of resources, arguing that it prolonged the line of contact and stretched Ukraine's already limited equipment and manpower.
The withdrawal from Kursk is seen as inevitable by some experts. The biggest risk factor is the potential for chaos or panic during the retreat. This scenario affected Russian troops near Kharkiv in 2022, leading to a hasty retreat and significant losses. The outcome of the Kursk operation will only be clear once the withdrawal is complete and the losses are assessed.
