Government inspectors have found unsanitary conditions in several Boar’s Head deli meat factories, not limited to the Virginia plant that was closed following a deadly outbreak of listeria. Reports from plants in Indiana, Arkansas, and Virginia detailed problems like meat residue on equipment, mold, and insects, spanning over six years. Inspectors noted issues such as “dry crusted meat” and “debris puddles” in these locations.
Boar’s Head officials acknowledged these violations don’t meet their high standards. Their other plants continue to operate under regular USDA supervision. However, the reported conditions raise concerns about safety and trust in the brand’s products. Experts and consumers have expressed alarm, with some lawsuits already filed against the company.
The USDA is reviewing its practices and promises stricter measures to control listeria. Meanwhile, Boar’s Head has hired a food safety culture manager to tackle these issues head-on.
