UNC's New Money Plan: Football Gets the Biggest Share

UNC has a new way to share money among its sports teams. This comes after a recent rule change that lets colleges pay student-athletes. The total money available is $20. 5 million. Most of it goes to football, but not as much as other schools give. UNC's athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, shared the breakdown. Football gets 65%, which is about $13 million. Men's basketball gets 35%, around $7 million. Other sports like baseball and women's basketball get much less, just $250, 000 each. This money split is based on how much revenue each sport makes. Football and men's basketball bring in the most money for UNC. Even though their revenue share dropped from 71% to 60. 2% in recent years, they still get almost all the money. With Bill Belichick now coaching football, UNC expects even more revenue soon. Women's basketball is doing well too. Their coach, Courtney Banghart, raised enough money to pay her team over $1 million. This is competitive with top programs in the country. UNC has a big athletic budget of $150 million. This helps support other sports that don't make as much money. The school plans to add $30 million more next year. Not all schools are this lucky. Some, like Wyoming, only have $2. 5 million to spend. UNC also gives out many scholarships. They support 530 student-athletes with a mix of full and partial scholarships. This is like giving 330 full rides. The school wants to keep helping all its sports teams, even if some make more money than others.
