Understanding Foot Deformities: How Flat Feet and Bunions Are Connected
Sun Jan 19 2025
Scientists decided to dig deeper into how flatfoot and bunions, also known as hallux valgus (HV), are related. They compared the sideways alignment of the inner part of the foot in people with just bunions, just flat feet, both problems, and those with no issues. This study aimed to enhance treatment methods for HV by investigating the underlying causes.
Researchers found that people with flat feet often have poor sideways alignment in the inner part of their foot. This could be why flat feet and bunions sometimes show up together. In contrast, people with just bunions might have better sideways alignment, but their big toe still drifts toward the smaller toes.
When both problems occur together, the sideways alignment of the inner foot is usually worse than in people with just one of the issues. This suggests that flat feet might make bunions more likely to develop.
The study highlights the importance of considering the whole foot when treating bunions. It shows that treating just the toe might not fix the underlying problem. Instead, doctors should also look at the alignment of the entire foot to provide better care.
