Understanding Menopause Through the Lens of Black and Chinese Women in the UK

Northwest England, UKThu May 29 2025
Menopause is a significant phase in a woman's life. It often requires changes in lifestyle, health, and overall well-being. This is why support is crucial, especially when considering health inequalities and inclusion issues. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the experiences of ethnic minority women in the UK. These women are often less likely to seek support and may face dissatisfaction when they do. A study was conducted to explore the menopause experiences of Black and Chinese heritage women. These women were over 40 and lived in the Northwest of England. The study used a method called Photovoice. This involved four phases: an introductory meeting, taking photos, selecting photos, and discussing the photos. Ten women participated and shared photos that reflected their menopause journeys. The study identified nine main themes from the photos and discussions. These themes included managing menopause symptoms through self-care, diet, and exercise. They also highlighted the role of community, religion, work, family, and aging in the menopause experience. The women shared their challenges and expectations when interacting with healthcare providers. They also discussed alternative methods of managing menopause and the significance of community support. The findings shed light on the unique experiences of Black and Chinese women going through menopause. It is important for healthcare providers to understand these experiences. This way, they can offer better support and care. The study also emphasizes the need for more research in this area. Understanding the diverse experiences of menopause can help improve the overall well-being of women from different backgrounds. It is crucial to listen to these women's voices and incorporate their perspectives into healthcare practices. This can lead to more inclusive and effective support for all women going through menopause.
