Union Endorses Morales for Providence Mayor
Providence, Rhode Island, USA,Tue Jun 23 2026
The Service Employees International Union State Council announced its support for David Morales’ bid to become mayor of Providence. The council’s president praised Morales for listening to workers and crafting practical solutions for families in the state.
At a rally outside Women & Infants Hospital, representatives from several SEIU local branches—1199NE, 32BJ, the Committee of Interns and Residents, and Local 580—gathered. Some wore scrubs from the hospital break rooms; others donned the union’s purple shirts, including Morales, who appeared in a bright violet suit.
Union leaders highlighted how often Morales has attended their meetings and protests, earning appreciation from long‑time staff. One nurse joked that she had seen Morales more often than her own boyfriend.
The endorsement comes amid ongoing contract talks between the hospital’s union and Brown University Health, as well as an upcoming renewal for Women & Infants Hospital. Morales promised to secure fair agreements and, if needed, support workers on the picket line.
He emphasized a united front against corporate interests that might try to undermine workers’ rights or inflate contract demands. The union believes Morales can help protect labor interests in Providence’s political arena.
