Union Rush to Secure Telework Deals Sparks Senate Action

Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) has taken a stand against federal agencies negotiating telework contracts with employees. She's particularly concerned about the potential waste of taxpayer money and decreased productivity. With the incoming Trump administration, federal unions are rushing to finalize telework agreements that would extend until 2029, fearing interference from the Department of Government Efficiency. Ernst isn't having it. In a series of letters, she urged agency heads to halt these negotiations immediately. "It's like they're giving bureaucrats a four-year vacation from the office, " she said. "They're prioritizing telework perks over serving taxpayers. " Ernst pointed out that unions are focusing on securing telework privileges, limiting accountability, and maximizing union time. She also questioned the use of taxpayer-funded time for union activities and sought more information on these deals. Ernst has been vocal about cutting government waste. Recently, she introduced the DRAIN THE SWAMP Act, aiming to relocate at least 30% of federal workers and eliminate remote work for the rest. The bill would also direct the Office of Management and Budget to sell excess office space. Earlier this month, Ernst released a report detailing the costs of telework. It showed that before COVID-19, only 3% of the federal workforce teleworked daily. Now, it's a third, with many entirely remote. The report warned about potential slacking and highlighted the $8 billion spent annually on maintaining office buildings and energy.
