UnitedHealth Faces Ongoing Lawsuit as Judge Lets Claims About $3. 3B Earnings Inflated Proceed
A federal judge allowed an investor lawsuit against UnitedHealth to move forward. The complaint says the health giant padded its 2024 earnings by roughly $3.3 billion. According to the filing, the inflated numbers were meant to mask weak results in the Medicare Advantage segment.
CalPERS, the California public employees’ retirement system, also entered the fray. It accused UnitedHealth’s leaders of misleading shareholders on multiple business aspects to push the stock higher. The judge, however, dismissed most of those pension fund claims.
The court explained that many statements referenced by CalPERS lacked specificity. It described them as typical promotional hype rather than factual disclosures. The judge noted that investors would likely ignore such puffery when making decisions.
As a result, the core lawsuit against UnitedHealth will continue. The case still focuses on the alleged earnings manipulation. Industry watchers say the verdict could influence how health insurers report their financial performance.
