Unlocking the Brain's Secrets: A New Look at Ex-Vivo MRI

The human brain remains one of the most intricate and least understood organs. Ex-vivo MRI scans, which are performed on brains outside the body, provide a unique window into this complexity. These scans allow for detailed anatomical mapping and integration with tissue studies. This makes them incredibly useful for both basic research and clinical investigations into healthy and diseased brains. However, ex-vivo MRI comes with its own set of hurdles. Preparing samples, acquiring the images, and analyzing the data can be quite challenging. Additionally, most existing ex-vivo MRI datasets are limited to a single type of image and often lack diversity in terms of ethnicity.
In a recent effort to overcome these issues, a team created a detailed multimodal MRI database. This database was built using six ex-vivo brains from Chinese individuals. It includes various types of MRI scans, such as structural MRI, high-angular resolution diffusion MRI, quantitative susceptibility mapping, and quantitative T1 and T2 maps. These different scans allow for a comprehensive view of the brain's microstructure and connectivity. The team also developed population-averaged multimodal templates and segmentation labels. These tools are designed to make the analysis of ex-vivo brain MRI easier and more accurate. The database is now publicly available. It fills a significant gap by providing high-resolution, multi-parametric ex-vivo human brain MRI data from Asian brains.
