Unraveling the Mystery: The 2020 Gas Station Shooting
USAThu Mar 13 2025
The story begins with a stolen car. A Hyundai Santa Fe was taken from a garage in Lockport. The owner, Gordon Nolte, had left the keys in the car and the garage door open. He woke up from a nap to find his car missing. A neighbor, Christina Marinucci, saw two people walking down the street, followed closely by a red car. They entered the garage and drove off in the Santa Fe. The red car, a Hyundai Elantra, was later found at the home of the accused shooter in Harvey.
The shooting happened at a Circle K gas station on Nelson Road in New Lenox. A 19-year-old, Charles Baird, was shot in the back. The shooter was in the stolen Santa Fe. The Circle K manager, Patricia Hudgens, saw one of the Santa Fe's occupants trying to open Baird's vehicle. When Baird returned, he was shot. The shooter was 16 at the time and is now 21. He was arrested 19 hours after the shooting and charged as an adult.
The evidence against the shooter is strong. A fingerprint was found on Baird's Subaru, and a cigarette butt with DNA was found in the Santa Fe. A surgical mask, identified by a witness as belonging to one of the car thieves, was also found in the Santa Fe. Prosecutors presented this evidence, along with surveillance footage and witness testimonies, to implicate the shooter. The DNA evidence is a key piece of the puzzle.
Amiya Savage, a Chicago resident who was 16 at the time of the shooting, testified that she believed the shooter to be the defendant. After his arrest, he and his cousin called her, asking why she had told the police he was responsible. Prosecutors plan to present the jail call made to Savage. The defense, however, argues that there was no eyewitness testimony, no murder weapon, and no confession that implicate their client. The defense will call the defendant's brother, who claims to have been with him the entire night of the shooting.
The trial is ongoing, with Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak presiding. The case is being heard at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet. The outcome of the trial will depend on the strength of the evidence presented and the credibility of the witnesses. The case raises questions about the reliability of DNA evidence and the importance of witness testimonies in criminal trials.
