You might have heard of the term "mansplaining" – where someone, often a man, explains something to a woman in a condescending or overbearing manner. Researchers in the U. S. wanted to find out how unsolicited advice affects women. They ran two studies: one using hypothetical scenarios and the other with real-life interactions.
In the first study, women were shown different vignettes. They felt less respected, powerful, and trusting when they received what researchers called "unresponsive" advice. This advice was unsolicited, didn't fit the situation, and wasn't asked for. It came mainly from men, but the findings showed that the advice-giver's gender didn't matter much. The second study involved real-life interactions, which supported these initial results.
In a third study, women anticipated feeling more stereotyped when men gave them unresponsive advice. But when women received the same advice, this effect wasn't as strong. A fourth study changed the comparison from questions to responsive advice, and results stayed consistent.
These findings come from a large study involving over 4, 300 U. S. adult women. They suggest that it's the nature of unresponsive advice – how it's not asked for or doesn't fit the situation – that impacts women's self-perception. Sometimes, the advice-giver's gender also plays a role. So, responsive suggestions or questions can be more helpful during conversations, especially between people of different genders.
