In the bustling city of Boston, a new documentary shines light on Larry DiCara, a former city councilor who many argue was the city’s best mayor that Boston never elected. Co-produced by Tim McTaggart, the film explores DiCara’s political career during the 1970s and 1980s, a time of significant changes including the busing crisis. Initially inspired by Larry Harmon’s column in The Boston Globe, the documentary was fueled by McTaggart’s passion after reading DiCara’s memoir.
The pandemic slowed the documentary's production, but DiCara’s recovery from an accident and family commitments also posed challenges. Despite these obstacles, DiCara and McTaggart remain committed to sharing Boston’s transformation story.
DiCara’s impact on the city’s transformation from high unemployment rates to a thriving economic hub is undeniable. His role during his tenure as a city councilor and later as a land-use lawyer has been pivotal. Interestingly, his political career ended in 1983 when he finished fourth in the mayoral preliminary election, with Ray Flynn eventually winning.
Friends and colleagues, such as Matt Kiefer from Goulston & Storrs, recognize DiCara for his accomplishments while retaining the humility of a “scrappy kid from Dorchester. ” DiCara’s focus now is on distributing the movie effectively, possibly entering it into film festivals.
“Making documentaries isn’t my profession, but I believe this is a valuable history lesson, ” DiCara shared. As for the title and some scenes, there might still be tweaks.
