Unusual Comet or Alien Tech? Scientists Debate New Space Mystery
MarsSat Nov 22 2025
A strange object named 3I/ATLAS has been making waves in the astronomy world. Recent images captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show a fuzzy white ball zooming past Mars. This object is special because it's from another star system, not our own.
The images were taken from about 19 million miles away. They show a cloud of dust and ice around the object, which scientists call a coma. This is typical for comets, but 3I/ATLAS is acting differently than expected.
Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb has a controversial theory. He thinks 3I/ATLAS might not be a natural comet at all. He believes it could be an alien spacecraft. Loeb points out that the jets of material coming from the object are pointing in unusual directions.
Normally, comets have jets pointing towards or away from the Sun. But 3I/ATLAS's jets seem to be pointing in the direction it's moving. Loeb finds this hard to explain if it's just a natural comet. He wonders if the jets could be clearing a path for the object, protecting it from tiny space rocks.
NASA officials are not convinced by Loeb's theory. They say the evidence points to 3I/ATLAS being a very unusual comet, not an alien spacecraft. However, they haven't done a detailed analysis of the latest images yet.
The good news is that 3I/ATLAS will pass close to Earth on December 19. This will give scientists a chance to study it more closely. They can measure the composition, speed, and amount of material in the jets. This could finally settle the debate about what 3I/ATLAS really is.
