The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is set to host an intriguing event next year. The Spyglass Festival, happening from January 15 to 17, 2026, promises a mix of spy games, movie nights, and interactive activities. This event is made possible by a grant from the Visit Albuquerque tourism program, aiming to attract visitors to the city.
Kicking off the festival is a special talk by David Kitchen, a retired CIA Senior Operations Officer. He will share insights into the hidden aspects of the Manhattan Project, focusing on the intelligence side rather than the scientific one. Kitchen's 33 years in the CIA give him a unique perspective on what makes a good spy. He emphasizes that motivation, suitability, and access are key, but the most important trait is the ability to stay hidden.
Contrary to the glamorous spy images portrayed in movies, Kitchen reveals that real spies often blend into the background. They are not the flashy, action-packed characters like James Bond. Instead, they are the "gray men" who go unnoticed at parties and in public. This was true for many involved in the Manhattan Project, whose actions surprised even those closest to them.
The festival continues with a free screening of the movie "Bridge of Spies, " introduced by Francis Gary Powers Jr. He will also sign copies of his book about his father, a U-2 pilot whose story is depicted in the film. The final day offers free admission and a variety of family-friendly activities, including invisible ink demonstrations and espionage games. The day ends with a documentary about the Manhattan Project and the Trinity testing site.
With New Mexico's rich history in the Atomic Age, the museum is the perfect place to explore these topics. The festival aims to educate and entertain visitors with a mix of history, espionage, and interactive experiences.
