A mysterious disease, known as Oropouche virus, has been causing concern among health officials due to its rapid spread and potential severity. As of August 1, over 8,000 cases have been reported, primarily in South America, but with increasing cases in the United States, Europe, and other previously unaffected regions. The Pan American Health Organization has raised the public health risk level to 'high' for the Americas region, urging increased surveillance and characterization of possible severe manifestations.
Oropouche virus, named after the Trinidad and Tobago village where it was discovered in 1955, has infected approximately 500,000 people. Symptoms can resemble those of dengue or Zika, including fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, joint stiffness, eye pain, light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and rash. In rare cases, it can infect the nervous system, causing meningitis and encephalitis.
Spread through insect bites, particularly from biting midges and certain mosquitoes, Oropouche virus is endemic to the Amazon basin region of South America. Climate change and deforestation increase the risk of interaction between humans and infected insects, facilitating its spread. The current outbreak has been reported in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Peru, with cases in travelers to affected areas in the United States.
This year marks the first reported deaths from Oropouche virus and evidence of transmission from pregnant women to fetuses, leading to adverse birth outcomes. Severe outcomes may be due to increased virus circulation. While there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, mosquito bite prevention and seeking medical care when necessary are crucial. Pregnant women should take special precautions, with the CDC recommending that they reconsider nonessential travel to Cuba.
