Unveiling the Truth: How Knowledge Shapes HIV Stigma Among German Teens

In Germany, many teens struggle with understanding HIV/AIDS. This confusion leads to unfair treatment and risky actions. To tackle this, it's crucial to figure out where teens get their HIV info and how it varies among different groups. A recent study in Munich involved over 2, 100 teens aged 14 to 18. This happened before a special health talk from November 2023 to February 2024. The survey was anonymous and covered various topics. These included personal details, HIV knowledge, where they get their info, views on people with HIV, and their own risk perceptions. The results showed that many teens are unsure about how HIV spreads. About 41% of students had doubts about transmission routes. Boys and those in non-academic school tracks were more likely to have wrong or incomplete info. Social media, especially TikTok, was a big source of HIV info. However, it wasn't always reliable. Schools also played a significant role in educating teens about HIV. Unfortunately, some teens had negative attitudes towards people living with HIV. These attitudes were often linked to their lack of knowledge or misinformation. The study highlighted the need for better education. Targeted and inclusive programs can help fill knowledge gaps and reduce stigma. Using both schools and trustworthy online platforms can make a big difference. Standardizing sex education and creating accurate online resources are key steps. These efforts can improve teens' health literacy and promote understanding and empathy towards people living with HIV. The findings also showed that demographic factors like gender and education level affect both knowledge and attitudes. This means that educational interventions need to be tailored to different groups. For example, boys and students in non-academic tracks may need more support.
