US Airstrikes Hit Yemen's Houthis
YemenThu Oct 17 2024
On Wednesday evening, the US military struck Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The attacks targeted underground storage facilities filled with advanced weapons. These weapons were used to target ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This time, the US used B-2 bombers, which are much larger and can carry more bombs than the fighter jets used before.
This strike comes at a tense time in the region. Israel is expected to retaliate against Iran's recent missile attacks. The conflict between Israel, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas in Gaza continues. The Houthis have been attacking commercial ships and Navy assets for months.
The US has been trying to stop these attacks by striking Houthi drones and missiles. In September, the Houthis claimed to have launched multiple missiles and drones at US destroyers, but none hit. The US struck 15 Houthi targets earlier this month.
The Houthis say they're supporting Hamas and Hezbollah with their attacks. In September, they fired a missile at Israel, but it didn't cause any injuries. Israel responded with airstrikes on Houthi targets.
The Houthis' attacks have caused harm to mariners and the environment. In August, an oil leak happened after an attack on a Greek-flagged vessel. The US has a lot of firepower in the region, including a carrier strike group and many other ships and aircraft.
