US warship stops ship heading to Iran and fires missile at it
Gulf of OmanSun May 31 2026
Late last week, a U. S. Navy vessel used a missile to disable a ship that was sailing toward an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. The target ship, registered in Gambia, was flying a foreign flag but carrying goods that could support Iran’s military efforts.
American forces claim they warned the crew more than twenty times before taking action. They say the ship ignored the alerts and kept moving toward Iranian waters. Officials also noted that the ship later changed course, though they didn’t explain why or where it went afterward.
Since mid-April, the U. S. has intercepted over a hundred ships suspected of heading to Iran, rerouting them or handing them over for inspection. These actions are part of a long-standing policy to cut off supplies that could fuel conflicts in the region.
Meanwhile, oil markets reacted instantly when Iran restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, causing fuel prices to climb worldwide. Experts warn that any further escalation could push energy costs even higher and strain global supplies.
A top defense official hinted that more aggressive steps might follow if talks to end the current tensions fail. The U. S. is clearly signaling it won’t back down, but the strategy risks drawing more countries into the dispute.
