Using Your Non‑Dominant Hand for Fun: What Science Really Says
London, United KingdomThu Oct 15 2026
Many people always use the same hand when they masturbate. A 2022 study asked 406 adults about their habit. It found that 79 percent usually stick with their dominant hand. Left‑handed folks were a bit more likely to try the other hand.
The idea behind switching hands is neuroplasticity. That is the brain’s ability to change when we learn something new. In another experiment, 22 right‑handed people practiced drawing with their left hand for ten days. They got faster and more accurate. Brain scans showed new connections in the areas that control movement. However, the researchers did not test whether this practice improved memory or intelligence.
Experts have mixed feelings. Psychologist Paul Rodway says most people stay with their dominant hand because it feels easier and natural. He notes that many women use sex toys, so the hand discussion does not apply to them. Therapist Michael Stock doubts that changing hands makes a big difference in the brain, but he agrees the new feeling can be fun. Sex therapist Catherine O’Dowd shared a client who liked the switch just because it felt different. If you are bored with your usual routine, trying the other hand might be enjoyable. Just do not expect it to raise your IQ.
