A few days ago, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared on a Zoom call that President Trump had promised him a top job at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the agency that includes the CDC, FDA, NIH, and USDA. This could be a big problem because Kennedy is known for his anti-vaccine beliefs and spreading misinformation about health.
Howard Lutnick, a leader in Trump's transition team, later denied Kennedy's appointment but then went on to repeat Kennedy's false claims about vaccines during an interview. This shows that anti-vaccine views are now tightly linked with Republican politics, even if Kennedy doesn't get the job.
Kennedy has been spreading false information about vaccines for a long time. He incorrectly thinks vaccines cause autism and that there's a secret deal between the government and drug companies. These ideas can have serious real-world impacts. In Samoa, an anti-vaccine activist, backed by Kennedy, helped cause a deadly measles outbreak that shut down the government.
Kennedy wants to control the agencies that regulate vaccines and thinks they're hiding data that would prove his views. He saw Trump as the way to get that access. Before Trump was sworn in, Kennedy claimed he would head a vaccine safety commission. That never happened, and we don't know if Trump lied, Kennedy exaggerated, or Trump just told him what he wanted to hear.
