Vaccine Views: How Beliefs and Alternative Medicine Shape Opinions
South Tyrol, ItalyThu Apr 17 2025
A recent study in Northern Italy explored how personal beliefs and alternative medicine use affect views on vaccines. It turns out that spirituality and the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can make people more cautious about vaccines. This includes both COVID-19 vaccines and those required for children. The research also looked into how spirituality might indirectly influence vaccine hesitancy through CAM use and conspiracy beliefs.
The study involved over 1300 participants from South Tyrol, Italy. Researchers used a scale called the GrAw-7 to measure non-religious spirituality. This scale focuses on feelings of gratitude and awe. The findings showed that higher levels of spirituality were linked to seeing vaccines as more harmful. This was true for both COVID-19 and childhood vaccinations.
Age, CAM use, and conspiracy beliefs were all connected to how harmful people thought vaccines were. However, distrust in institutions was only linked to vaccine skepticism, not spirituality. Interestingly, well-being and altruism were only associated with spirituality. This suggests that spiritual people might have different motivations and concerns when it comes to vaccines.
The study also found that spirituality plays a modest but significant role in how CAM use and conspiracy thinking affect vaccine perceptions. This means that spiritual beliefs might indirectly influence vaccine views by shaping attitudes towards alternative medicine and conspiracy theories. People who are more spiritually inclined might be more likely to use CAM and believe in conspiracies, which in turn can make them more hesitant about vaccines.
So, what does this all mean? Public health efforts might need to consider spiritual beliefs when communicating about vaccines. Presenting vaccinations as a community responsibility could help. Engaging spiritual and community leaders could also boost vaccine acceptance among spiritually inclined groups. This approach could make vaccine messages more relatable and effective for those with strong spiritual beliefs.
