Venus Missions Face Tight Budget Choices

Texas, USAFri Mar 27 2026
NASA is still trying to decide how much it can support a group of Venus probes, according to its planetary science head. The agency has been in talks with the European Space Agency about a joint mission that will map Venus’s surface from orbit. A recent budget bill gave the planetary division $2. 54 billion for 2026, a bit more than the administration’s suggestion but still about $200 million less than last year. That shortfall means not every planned project can keep moving forward. The European-led Envision mission, which began building in 2025, is supposed to launch by 2033 at the latest. If it misses that window, the planet’s alignment will push its launch back by at least three years. NASA would normally supply a high‑resolution radar called VenSAR, but financial limits are forcing ESA to look for alternatives. One idea is for European countries to develop the radar themselves, keeping Envision on track without extra U. S. money.
At the same time, NASA is preparing a budget for 2026 that will fund its own Venus probes. The bill includes $99 million to keep the DAVINCI spacecraft alive, while work on VERITAS is proceeding slowly. The DAVINCI team hopes to launch in December 2030, earlier than previously expected, to take advantage of a “rush for science. ” The probe will enter Venus’s thick atmosphere in 2033 and send back data as fast as possible while it falls toward the surface. Despite budget cuts, both NASA teams are still making progress. They have conducted field studies in places that mimic Venus’s harsh conditions, like Iceland, to test instruments and techniques. “We’ve been doing more with less, ” said a team leader, highlighting the perseverance of scientists working under tight financial constraints. The future of Venus exploration will hinge on how these missions balance ambition with fiscal reality. NASA’s role in the European mission remains unsettled, and each project must decide whether to push forward or pause until more resources become available.
