Vice President Kamala Harris is hitting the road to the Midwest, aiming to sway suburban voters who are still on the fence about Donald Trump. She's teaming up with former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, a staunch Trump critic, for a series of talks moderated by conservative radio hosts and strategists. Harris will be visiting Chester County in Pennsylvania, Oakland County in Michigan, and Waukesha County in Wisconsin—all areas that previously supported Nikki Haley before she dropped out of the presidential race.
With the election just a few weeks away and the race neck and neck, Harris is looking to capture any possible votes. She's hoping to convince those who haven't decided yet, encourage Democrats who might sit out the election, and pick off voters where support for Trump is waning. A few votes here and there could make a big difference. For instance, in Waukesha County, Haley won over 9, 000 votes even after exiting the race. Wisconsin itself was decided by only 20, 000 votes in the 2020 election.
Cheney and Harris will be joined by conservative radio host Charles Sykes and GOP strategist Sarah Longwell. Cheney endorsed Harris due to her concerns about Trump's actions, including the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. She lost her House seat after co-chairing the committee investigating the violent event.
Harris has been increasingly focusing on Trump's lies about the 2020 election and his role in the Capitol riot. She warns that Trump is unstable and would damage democratic norms if reelected. "Donald Trump is an unserious man, " she says, "and the consequences of him returning to the White House are brutally serious. "
Trump, on the other hand, has been downplaying the January 6 events, describing them as "a day of love. " Harris will be back in Pennsylvania soon for a CNN town hall in Delaware County, where she'll take questions from voters.
