Virginia Colleges Team Up to Expand Surgical Tech Training

Two community colleges in Virginia are joining forces to grow a surgical tech program. Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville has already seen 16 students finish with an associate degree in surgical technology. The new plan adds lab and clinical work at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg.

The expanded track is set to start in fall 2027. Students will first complete required courses before entering the main classes. This partnership lets learners study close to home and watch lectures online, so they don’t need to travel.

Anyone interested should begin the prerequisite classes now. Starting early helps with admission and raises the chance of getting a spot. The colleges want to make the path clearer for students in the Lynchburg area.

PVCC’s dean of health and life sciences said the program has a solid history of keeping graduates in the region. The chief workforce officer added that bringing labs nearer and streaming classes removes travel barriers and opens more doors. Both say the effort will strengthen the local surgical workforce.
