Virtual Health Programs: A New Way to Tackle Heart Health
Winnipeg, CanadaSat Jan 25 2025
In 2021, Seven Oaks General Hospital's Wellness Institute (WI) launched an online cardiometabolic risk reduction program to help people improve their heart health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program included virtual health coaching and lifestyle education. The goal was to see if people liked the program, stuck with it, and if it actually helped them.
The study involved 93 participants, mostly women, who were tracked for 16 weeks. Researchers looked at changes in their weight, blood pressure, and lifestyle habits. They also asked participants about their experiences through questionnaires and focus groups.
Most participants, aged around 58, completed the program and found it helpful. They lost some weight, lowered their blood pressure, and became more active. The virtual coaching sessions helped them stay motivated. The program seemed acceptable and effective for most people.
This shows that online health programs could be a good way to improve people's lifestyles and health.
