Virtual Lab Twins Make Biochemistry Safer and Cheaper

Academic InstitutionThu Oct 01 2026

Biochemistry labs are tough to run. They need pricey gear, strict safety rules, and lots of space. Many schools can't give every student enough hands‑on time. That means learners miss out on real practice.

A new system called BioDTLab tries to fix that. It builds a virtual copy of a real lab using VR headsets, sensors, robots, and data tools. An AI tutor powered by a large language model watches what students do and talks them through steps.

The AI tutor checks if a student follows the right order, understands the concepts, and spots mistakes. It gives instant hints without a human teacher hovering. This lets learners repeat tricky parts until they get it.

Because the virtual lab has no chemical spills or broken equipment, it's safer and cheaper. Schools can scale it to hundreds of users at once. Teachers can assign virtual prep before the physical session, so class time focuses on deeper questions.

Could this approach replace some real labs entirely? Maybe not all, but it opens doors for more students to explore complex experiments. It also raises questions about how much virtual practice is enough before touching real reagents.
