Virtual Reality Helps Teens in Trouble
Mon Apr 14 2025
Virtual reality is not just for fun and games. It is also being used to help teens with behavior problems. One program, called Street Temptations, uses virtual reality to help teens think more clearly and want to change their behavior. This program is an extra help for teens who are already in trouble with the law. It focuses on helping teens understand how other people think and feel. This is called mentalization.
The program was tested in a real-life setting with teens who had behavior problems. The test used both numbers and words to see if the program worked. The teens filled out daily reports about their thoughts and how much they wanted to change. They also did tests before and after the program to see if they were better at understanding others' thoughts and feelings. After the program, the teens and their therapists were asked about their experiences.
Out of the 8 teens who started the program, only 3 finished it. This is a big drop-off rate. The results showed that the teens who finished the program got better at understanding others' thoughts. However, they did not show more motivation to change their behavior. The teens and therapists said good things about the program and virtual reality. They also had ideas for how to make it better.
The program seems to have some good points, but it also has some problems. For one, many teens did not finish the program. This could be because they found it hard or boring. Also, the program did not seem to make the teens more motivated to change their behavior. This is a big problem, because the whole point of the program is to help teens want to change.
Another issue is that the program was only tested on a small group of teens. This makes it hard to know if the results would be the same for other teens. Also, the program was tested in a specific setting, so it might not work as well in other places.
One good thing about the program is that it uses virtual reality. This makes it more interesting and engaging for teens. It also allows teens to practice dealing with tough situations in a safe way. This could help them feel more confident and ready to face real-life challenges.
In the end, Street Temptations has some promise. But it also has some big problems that need to be fixed. More research is needed to see if the program can really help teens with behavior problems. And if it can, how can it be improved to keep more teens interested and motivated to change?

If the VR program was replaced with a game of 'Would You Rather', would the results be the same?
Could the lack of increase in motivation for behavior change be due to a hidden agenda within the VR program?
How could the study be redesigned to include a more robust control group and reduce the risk of bias?
