Virus Overload: Four Bugs Making Us Sick

Des Plaines, IL, USAThu Jan 23 2025
This winter, the United States is dealing with a unique challenge – a "quademic" of flu, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and norovirus. While the first three affect the respiratory system, norovirus causes nasty stomach issues. Experts are concerned because norovirus is particularly vicious this year, with a new strain circulating. This means our bodies aren't used to it, making us more susceptible. Handwashing, cleaning food thoroughly, and avoiding contact with sick people can help prevent infection. Norovirus isn't the only troublemaker. COVID-19, flu, and RSV are also widespread. The flu season alone has already hit 9 million people, with deaths including children. Symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and body aches are common in these three viruses. While there are vaccines for COVID-19 and flu, RSV doesn't have one yet. Hospitals in some areas have started limiting visitors due to high viral activity. Keeping hygiene in check and staying away from others when sick are key preventive measures.
