Vivien Leigh's Rollercoaster Life: A Peek Behind the Glamour

Sri LankaSun Jan 05 2025
Vivien Leigh, known for her starring role in "Gone with the Wind, " was no stranger to drama both on and off screen. She was famous for playing troubled characters, but her real life was just as complex. In 1953, she took on a role as a "normal" woman in the movie "Elephant Walk, " only to face a mental breakdown shortly after. Leigh was already a two-time Oscar winner and married to Laurence Olivier when she started filming. However, her mental health was declining due to issues like bipolar disorder and a crumbling marriage. Olivier's infidelities and Leigh's own struggles with her mental health created a stormy environment. During the shoot in Sri Lanka, Leigh's behavior became erratic. She sent Olivier strange postcards, stayed up late drinking, and even had a meltdown over shorts. Things escalated during the move to Hollywood. On the plane, she panicked and tried to jump out, believing the wing was on fire. Her behavior worsened, leading to her being replaced by Elizabeth Taylor in the film. Olivier stepped in to bring her home, but instead of taking her home, he dropped her off at an asylum. Leigh was subjected to harsh treatments at the asylum, including ice baths and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). These treatments left her with burn marks and affected her memory. Even after these intense treatments, her mental health struggles continued. She had more manic episodes, struggled with relationships, and even went through multiple rounds of ECT. Despite her fragile state, Leigh never stopped working. She performed on stages around the world and even in Broadway musicals. But her health finally gave out in 1967 when she died from tuberculosis at the age of 53.
