Washington Lifts Donation Caps Before Election

The Washington State Public Disclosure Commission voted to remove the limits on large contributions to state campaigns. The decision was announced just before the November election. The commission said it was concerned that the state law might not be enforceable.

Before the change, individuals could give up to $75,000 to statewide campaigns and $7,500 to local campaigns within 21 days of the general election. These caps were suspended because of doubts about their legality. The commission also noted that similar limits had not applied to ballot measure campaigns for several years.

The move drew criticism from both sides. Conservative activist Brian Heywood said it would let progressive groups spend more on state Supreme Court races. Progressive consultant Stephen Paolini called the timing terrible, comparing it to changing rules right before the Super Bowl.

The rule shift means wealthy donors can now give large sums to independent groups that support or oppose candidates. This could affect several state Supreme Court seats that are up for election. Observers say the decision may reshape how money flows in the upcoming races.
