Watch Out for Fake Lawyers After Crypto Scams
USAMon Oct 07 2024
Cryptocurrencies have been a big thing since Bitcoin came on the scene in 2009. Now, there are over 20,000 cryptos out there. But with this growth comes trouble – crypto scams are on the rise. The FBI says these scams went up by more than 50% between 2022 and 2023, reaching almost $4 billion in losses! And now, there's a new kind of scam to watch out for.
Scammers are pretending to be lawyers or law firms, targeting people who have already lost money in crypto scams. They promise to help get the stolen money back. But really, they just want more personal info and money from you. The FBI says these fake lawyers contact victims through social media or fake websites. Sometimes, they claim to be working with government agencies that have your details.
If you've been scammed before, stay careful. Don't trust recovery services that promise too much or ask for personal info upfront. Remember, law enforcement won't charge you to investigate crimes. And if you do get scammed, don’t blame yourself – it happens to many people. Just gather all the details and report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Stay safe online!
