A place where people come together to talk about taxes, but end up discussing spending instead. That's what happened at a recent hearing in Waukegan, Illinois. The Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 wanted to raise its property tax levy by almost 5% for the next school year. Sounds like a lot, right? Well, the district's money person, Gwen Polk, said it's just a backup plan in case they need more money later.
The school board hasn't raised taxes in five years, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and some help from the federal government. But now, people are wondering what's happening with the money. Are taxes going up because the district needs more, or is it just a case of asking for more than they need?
During the hearing, folks had a lot to say about how the money is spent. They weren't so happy about the salaries of some administrators, and they thought the classrooms could use some more supplies. Board member Adriana Gonzalez, who's a new homeowner herself, felt their pain. She said it's tough, but someone's got to make sure the schools get what they need.
Board member Christine Lensing wanted to know if the district could get some tax relief from the state. Polk said they've applied, but it's not worked out yet. The district gets most of its money from the state, and some from a federal COVID relief package. But, not every school district gets the same amount, and Waukegan is working with what it's got.
Polk said the district has to figure out what's most important and spend the money there. That might mean tough choices, but that's just how it goes. And hey, the details are all out there for anyone who wants to check them out.
So, what do you think? Is the school board making the right choices with the money? Or could they be doing something different?
