Waynesboro's Fresh Start: Reviving Local Democracy

Waynesboro is known for its active community spirit. Now, there's a new effort to boost local democracy. The League of Women Voters in the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro area is back. Their goal? To make democracy stronger right where people live. The group focuses on voter education and civic engagement. They want to create safe spaces for tough conversations. Topics like voting rights, public safety, and youth involvement are on the table. The aim is to make sure everyone's voice is heard.This isn't just talk. The group has already teamed up with the local NAACP. Together, they collected over 800 pounds of food and raised $2, 000. This went to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. It's a clear example of how community action can make a real difference. Across Virginia, young people are stepping up. The LWV-VA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and the Youth Council raised $6, 300. This money went to Virginia food banks. It shows that democracy isn't just about policies. It's about people working together. The group invites everyone to join. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. They take place at the Staunton Library at 6 p. m. It's a chance to meet neighbors and shape the community.
