Ever wondered what's really in those fancy fitness tracker bands? A recent study from the University of Notre Dame found some surprising — and worrying — answers. They tested 22 different bands, ranging in price, and found that many contained very high levels of a chemical called perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA). This chemical, part of a group known as PFAS or "forever chemicals, " doesn't break down easily in the environment and has been linked to serious health issues like certain cancers.
The bands with the highest levels of PFHxA were the ones that cost more than $15. Three of the most expensive bands, costing over $30, had especially high amounts of fluorine, which is a strong sign of PFAS contamination. These findings suggest that many of our popular wearable tech devices might be exposing us to harmful chemicals without us even knowing it!
PFAS are commonly found in products like non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics. But this is the first time they've been studied in fitness tracker bands. The researchers found that some samples had over 1, 000 parts per billion of PFHxA — much higher than in other consumer products.
These "forever chemicals" don't just disappear; they stick around in our soil and water for a long time. They've been found in public water systems and can cause health problems like reduced immune function and developmental delays in children.
The good news is that not all bands were contaminated. The study also found some that didn't contain these harmful chemicals. This shows that manufacturers can make safe products if they choose to.
The study, published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, highlights the need for more research into PFAS in wearable tech. It's important to know what's in the products we use every day and how they might affect our health.
