Weather Forecasts Powered by AI, Then Funding Vanishes

Oklahoma, USAFri Jun 12 2026
A scientist moved to Oklahoma in 2005 and started exploring how artificial intelligence could sharpen weather predictions. Her focus was on extreme events—hurricanes, heat waves and snowstorms—that demand split‑second decisions about evacuation or safety. The challenge lies in the high stakes and uncertainty of these moments, but AI shines because it can sift through vast amounts of meteorological data to spot hidden patterns and link different models.
Over two decades, AI has evolved from a curiosity to a tool that government agencies and private companies use in everyday forecasts shown on smartphones. In 2019, the researcher received a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation to launch an AI‑driven weather institute. The project hired 24 faculty, 35 researchers, 46 graduate students and 83 undergraduates—an effort too large for smaller grants. However, her funding was later cut, illustrating how even high‑impact AI research can face abrupt financial setbacks.
