Weather Stress and Health Risks for Young Women in Kenya

Kenya, NairobiTue Apr 21 2026
Extreme weather, like floods or droughts, can make life harder for young people in Kenya. When food and water become scarce, girls and women often face more health problems. One common issue is urinary tract infections (UTIs), which many report without a doctor’s visit. A study looked at girls and young women in Nairobi and Kisumu. Researchers asked about their food, water, and shelter security, as well as any recent storms or heat waves. They also checked for signs of HIV risk and how these factors might relate to UTI symptoms. The findings show a clear link: girls who felt unsafe about their basic needs were more likely to report UTI symptoms.
Those who had been hit by extreme weather events also reported higher rates of infection. HIV vulnerability added another layer, making the health risks stronger for some groups. These results suggest that when planning health programs, officials should consider climate and resource issues together with HIV prevention. Improving water access, food security, and disaster preparedness could lower infection rates among young women. The study highlights the need for a holistic approach to health that includes environmental and social factors.
