It's been a chilly start to the day, with temperatures dipping into the lower 40s, and even the mid-30s in some areas. You might have seen some frost if you looked hard enough. But don't worry, things are warming up. Thanks to some south winds, today will feel a lot more comfortable. Tomorrow is expected to be even warmer, with highs reaching the mid-80s. It's like an August day without the sticky humidity!
Saturday could be the hottest day of the next week, with temperatures possibly hitting the upper 80s. But don't let the numbers scare you, it won't feel too overwhelming due to the lower dew points. Just remember to take care in the sun and on hot pavements.
Rain? Not in the forecast for a while. There's a slight chance of some showers in northeastern Missouri on Friday, but nothing concrete for the next seven days. Mid-month might bring some moisture, but let's not hold our breath.
Let's break down the day's weather: Sunny and mild today with highs in the mid-70s. Nighttime will be fair and not as cool, with lows in the mid-50s. Tomorrow, expect warmer weather with highs in the mid-80s. Friday will cool down a bit, with highs in the mid to upper 70s.
We've had a few dry Octobers before, like in 2020 when we only had a trace of rain for the first three weeks. It wasn't until the 21st that we saw our first measurable rain, and it wasn't much. November and December of that year weren't very wet either. It wasn't until January 2021 that we saw more moisture, including 5 inches of snow.
This time of year, we get cold fronts that can bring some heat before they pass. If the conditions are just right, we can see temperatures soar. Tomorrow and Saturday are a good example. The record high for Saturday is 97°, but we won't hit that. Still, we might come close to 90° before the next front arrives.
Looking at the temperature changes over the last 24 hours, you can see the cooler air moving from the Plains to the Lakes. The warmer air is moving into the upper Midwest and the northern Rockies. That's the air that will be with us tonight and tomorrow.
In other news, the southeastern US is still recovering from recent flooding. Many people didn't have flood insurance, making the situation even tougher. In North Carolina, for example, less than 1% of homes were insured before Hurricane Helene.
There's also a new hurricane in the tropics, named Kirk. It's expected to stay out at sea but could bring heavy rain to western Florida.
