Weekend Box Office: Superheroes and Vampires Rule the Screen
USAMon May 12 2025
The weekend box office saw a familiar face at the top. The superhero film that has been making waves, featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, continued its reign with a solid $33 million. This brings its domestic total to $128. 4 million in just two weeks. The film had a slight rebrand, but it didn't affect its box office performance. It's clear that audiences are still eager for more superhero action.
Meanwhile, the vampire thriller directed by Ryan Coogler is still going strong. It held onto the second spot with $21 million, pushing its domestic total to $214. 4 million. This film, starring Michael B. Jordan and a talented ensemble, is expected to cross the $300 million mark globally very soon. It's impressive how it's maintained its audience appeal over four weeks.
Several new movies tried to make their mark this weekend. Clown in a Cornfield, Shadow Force, and Fight or Flight all had their premieres. They earned $3. 6 million, $2. 015 million, and $2. 001 million respectively. These numbers show that while new releases can make an impact, they often struggle to compete with established franchises.
A Minecraft Movie, now in its sixth week, continues to be a box office favorite. It added another $7. 9 million, bringing its domestic total to nearly $409 million. This video game adaptation, directed by Jared Hess, has proven to be a hit with audiences. The Accountant 2, starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, also performed well in its third week, earning $6 million and pushing its domestic total to $50. 8 million.
Looking ahead, next week brings more competition. The animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Rise of Leo is sure to attract young viewers. The Weeknd's big-screen debut in Hurry Up Tomorrow and the latest installment in the Final Destination franchise, Bloodlines, will also vie for top spots. It's going to be an interesting battle at the box office.
The global box office chart is quite similar to the domestic one. Thunderbolts* leads with $67 million this week, followed by Sinners with $27. 7 million. A Minecraft Movie and The Accountant 2 also make the top four. However, Clown in a Cornfield dropped from fifth to tenth globally, making way for The Dumpling Queen, a Chinese film based on a true story.
