Walking into a hotel room and seeing a minor with an adult and cash. Would you correctly identify it as domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST)? Surprisingly, many people struggle with this. A recent study with 320 volunteers from an online platform found that only about half (61%) could spot a crime in such a scenario. The age of the minor played a big role. More people (70%) saw the crime when the minor was 13, compared to when they were 17 (55%).
The study also highlighted a troubling trend: people tend to blame older teens for their situation. Those with less knowledge about trafficking were more likely to do this. This shows that our understanding of DMST needs improvement. It's clear that better education is key to helping more people recognize and report these cases correctly.
