What happens when a group promises freedom but delivers control? UK cult crackdown raises tough questions
Crewe, Cheshire, United KingdomThu Apr 30 2026
UK police arrested nine people last month after a woman spoke up about severe abuses inside a religious group. The arrests happened at Webb House, a former orphanage turned commune in Crewe where over 100 people lived. Authorities confirmed six men and three women were taken into custody, including members from six different countries. The group calls itself Ahmadi, but claims of slavery, sexual abuse, and a strange mix of religious ideas have drawn attention.
The group’s leader, an Egyptian-American named Hashem, started the movement in 2015. He says he’s a mix of religious figures—Jesus, the Islamic messiah figure Mahdi, and even the Pope. Recently, he publicly asked former US President Donald Trump to join, calling him the “Emperor of the United States” and promising power in return. Hashem also joked about claiming the Pope title first, saying the first claim counts.
Police insist they’re investigating the reported crimes, not the religion itself. Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley said patrols increased to keep the public safe and asked anyone with concerns to come forward. But the case makes people wonder: how do groups mix spiritual promises with such extreme control?
Two other properties linked to the group were raided the same week. The organization operates worldwide, with a US base in Nevada. Hashem rules it all, appointing regional “bishops” but keeping final decisions in his hands.
