What Happens When Weight‑Loss Injections Stop?

United States, USAWed Mar 18 2026
Millions of people use GLP‑1 drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy to lose weight. They often ask: what will happen once the injections end? Older clinical trials said people would gain back much of the weight quickly. These studies were very controlled and did not show what happens in everyday life. A new study from the Cleveland Clinic looked at almost 8, 000 adults who used these medicines for three to twelve months and then stopped. The researchers followed the patients in a real‑world setting, where many changed to other drugs or started new treatments. They found that only about half a percent of the weight was regained in one year for those who had lost an average of 8. 4 percent before stopping.
Most patients either restarted the same medication or switched to another weight‑loss drug, and some joined intensive diet and exercise programs. Staying connected with doctors or a health plan seems to keep people from regaining too much weight. The study has limits. It was done in only one health system, so results might differ elsewhere. Also, the researchers could not track every other change that may have helped patients keep weight off. Future research will compare how well different treatments work after stopping GLP‑1 drugs, giving doctors and patients clearer choices.
