What Makes Marriage Last or End in Cameroon?
CameroonMon May 11 2026
In many parts of the world, marriage is seen as a lifelong commitment. But in Cameroon, that isn’t always the case. A study took a close look at why some marriages there don’t last. More than 10, 000 women who had been married at some point were asked about their experiences. The goal wasn’t to judge but to understand what pushes couples apart.
Money problems came up a lot. When families struggle financially, arguments over bills and basic needs can pile up. Some women said their husbands stopped contributing, leaving them to handle expenses alone. Others mentioned husbands taking on extra wives, which often leads to tension. These weren’t just small disagreements—they were big enough to break trust.
Another big factor was education. Women with more schooling were less likely to see their marriages fail. Why? Education gives people more options. It can mean better jobs, financial independence, and even the confidence to walk away from an unhealthy relationship. But in Cameroon, not everyone gets that chance. Rural areas, in particular, lag behind in schooling, which can trap women in difficult marriages.
Family also plays a role. In some cultures, relatives have a say in who you marry and how you stay married. Pressure from in-laws can make a tough situation worse. If a woman’s family sides with her, she might feel supported enough to leave a bad marriage. But if they side with her husband, she could feel stuck.
The study didn’t just point fingers—it showed that marriage in Cameroon is complicated. It’s not just about love or arguments. It’s about money, education, culture, and support systems. Some women leave when they feel they have no other choice. Others stay because they see no better option. The real question is: what would make these marriages stronger in the first place?
