What's Holding Back MicroLED TVs from Getting Smaller?
Sun Apr 26 2026
MicroLED TVs promise brighter screens and better colors than older tech like OLEDs or LCDs. But here’s the catch: they’re huge—and expensive. A single 114-inch model costs over $150, 000, making it a luxury for most people. Why can’t these TVs be smaller? Because shrinking the tiny light pixels without breaking the bank is still a challenge.
Right now, manufacturers focus on big screens where microLEDs shine. Smaller screens need even tinier LEDs, which cost more to produce. Even Apple tried—and dropped—the idea of a microLED Apple Watch because production costs were too high. The tech works, but it’s not cheap.
Some companies are exploring a middle ground: using microLEDs as a backlight for LCD screens instead of the main display. This could make smaller TVs more affordable while still improving picture quality. Early tests suggest this approach might even outperform OLEDs in some ways.
Will this hybrid tech take off? Experts won’t say yet. If it does, it could push manufacturers to find better ways to miniaturize microLEDs. If not, these tiny lights might stay stuck in big, pricey screens—or just help other displays look better.
